Cameroon
Cameroon is a country located in central Africa, bordering Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. With a population of over 26 million people, Cameroon is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in Africa, with more than 200 ethnic groups and languages.
Road network
The road network in Cameroon has been steadily growing over the past few decades. As of 2018, the country had a total of approximately 51,350 kilometers (31,898 miles) of roads, with about 16% paved, according to the World Bank. The main highways in Cameroon are the National Road 1, which connects the capital city of Yaounde to the port city of Douala, and the National Road 2, which runs from Yaounde to the northern town of Garoua.
In recent years, Cameroon has been working to improve its road infrastructure with the help of international organizations and donor countries. In 2018, the African Development Bank approved a $150 million loan to finance the construction of the first phase of the Yaounde-Brazzaville road project, which will connect Cameroon to the Republic of the Congo. This project is expected to boost trade and economic growth in the region.
The country has also been working to improve its expressway system, with the construction of the Yaounde-Douala Expressway, which will be the first four-lane expressway in Cameroon, and will reduce travel time between the two cities from 4 hours to 2.5 hours. The project is expected to cost around $1.3 billion and is being financed by the Chinese government.
In addition to paved roads, Cameroon also has a network of gravel roads and 4×4 tracks, which are essential for accessing remote areas of the country, particularly in the north and far west regions.
Overall, while Cameroon’s road network still faces some challenges, particularly in terms of maintenance and connectivity to rural areas, the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity are expected to have positive impacts on the country’s economy and quality of life for its citizens.
