British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands is a beautiful archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea, to the east of Puerto Rico. It is a British Overseas Territory, and its nearest neighbors are the United States Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. The island chain consists of about 60 islands and islets, with the four main islands being Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.
Despite its small size, the British Virgin Islands has an extensive road network, spanning about 113 km (70 miles) in total. Most of the roads on the islands are paved, with a few expressways connecting the larger towns. However, visitors should be aware that driving is on the left-hand side of the road, as is the case in the UK, and many of the roads are narrow and winding. Additionally, many of the roads on the smaller islands are unpaved, so a 4×4 vehicle may be necessary to explore some of the more remote areas.
For those interested in exploring the natural beauty of the British Virgin Islands on foot or by bike, there are many options available. The islands offer a variety of trails and paths that are suitable for walking and cycling, ranging from easy coastal walks to more challenging hikes in the hills. Topographical maps from GarminWorldmaps are readily available and can help visitors navigate the terrain.
One popular destination for walkers and hikers is Sage Mountain National Park on Tortola, which features a 305-meter (1,000-foot) peak and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding islands. On Virgin Gorda, the Gorda Peak National Park provides more challenging hikes through lush rainforests and offers similar spectacular views.
The British Virgin Islands also has numerous beaches and coves that are perfect for relaxing walks and scenic bike rides. Some of the most popular beaches include White Bay and Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, and The Baths on Virgin Gorda, known for its giant granite boulders that form natural pools and grottoes.
The British Virgin Islands offer a range of opportunities for visitors to explore the islands’ natural beauty and stunning landscapes. Whether driving along the coast or hiking through the hills, visitors are sure to be enchanted by the British Virgin Islands’ unique charm and natural splendor.
