Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago located off the east coast of Tanzania in East Africa. It is made up of two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, and several smaller ones. The archipelago is situated in the Indian Ocean and has a tropical climate.

Zanzibar is bordered by Tanzania to the south and Kenya to the north. It covers a total land area of approximately 2,650 square kilometers and has a population of around 1.6 million people.

The road network in Zanzibar is relatively small compared to other countries. The total length of paved roads on the island is only about 400 kilometers, while the remaining roads are gravel or dirt tracks. Despite this, driving around the island is relatively easy as there is little traffic, and the roads are generally in good condition.

However, if you prefer a more active way of exploring the island, walking, cycling, or hiking can be a great option. Zanzibar’s terrain is hilly, with a maximum elevation of about 120 meters, making it perfect for hiking and trekking. There are several scenic trails, and with the help of topographical maps from GarminWorldmaps, you can easily navigate your way around the island’s varied terrain.

Cycling is also an excellent option for exploring the island, especially on the quieter roads and paths. You can rent bikes from various outlets on the island, and there are several cycling tours available that take you through scenic routes along the coast and through villages.

Zanzibar may be a small island, but it offers plenty of opportunities for exploration and adventure, whether by car, bike, or foot. With its stunning beaches, rich culture, and unique history, Zanzibar is definitely a destination worth visiting.
