Mauritania

Mauritania is a country located in the western region of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal to the southwest, Mali to the east and southeast, Algeria to the northeast, and the Western Sahara to the north and northwest.

Mauritania has a total road network of approximately 10,000 km, with approximately 3,400 km of the roads being paved. The main paved highway in the country is the Route Nationale 1, which runs from the capital city of Nouakchott in the west to Néma in the southeast. Other major highways include the Route Nationale 2, which runs from Rosso on the border with Senegal to the capital city of Nouakchott, and the Route Nationale 3, which runs from Nouadhibou on the Atlantic coast to the city of Néma.

While there are some expressways in the country, they are limited in number. The majority of the road network is composed of unpaved or gravel roads, which can be challenging to navigate, especially during the rainy season when they can become muddy and flooded.

For those interested in walking, cycling, or hiking in Mauritania, there are a variety of options available. The Banc d’Arguin National Park, located on the Atlantic coast, offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. The Adrar region in the north of the country offers stunning landscapes and opportunities for trekking and exploring the desert. Additionally, the Tagant plateau in central Mauritania provides a variety of hiking trails through beautiful scenery.

To navigate these areas, it is recommended to use topographical maps, such as those available from GarminWorldmaps. These maps can help hikers and cyclists plan routes, navigate terrain, and ensure they stay on course while exploring the beautiful landscapes of Mauritania.
